KVH Industries Inc., of Middletown, R.I., announced it has received a $1.5 million order from Recon/Optical Inc., an aerial reconnaissance corporation and a provider of tactical reconnaissance cameras, for KVH's DSP-3000 fiber optic gyro (FOG) systems, to be used in the US Army's common remotely operated weapon stations (CROWS). CROWS systems are made by Recon/Optical and Electro Optic Systems Pty. Ltd., an Australia laser technology developer, in conjunction with the Army. They enable turret gunners to operate, aim and fire a turret weapon from inside a vehicle. The systems, which are already being used in Iraq, are equipped with a daytime video camera with dual-action stabilization, a night-time sensor, a laser rangefinder, ballistic computer, display and control panel. Two KVH DSP-3000 FOGs are installed in each CROWS system. The order is part of a five-year contract.
