JDS Uniphase has announced a strategic supply agreement with Fabrinet, a contract manufacturer with operations in Bangkok, Thailand, to further consolidate manufacturing and streamline its supply chain. The agreement includes the sale to Fabrinet of JDS Uniphase's Singapore and Bintan, Indonesia, manufacturing operations and provides JDS Uniphase with long-term sourcing guarantees for datacom transceivers currently being manufactured at these facilities. Approximately 450 employees associated with manufacturing will transfer to Fabrinet, although JDS Uniphase will retain its Singapore design and development team. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. . . . James King has joined Rockwell Scientific Co. LLC, in Thousand Oaks, Calif., as its new CFO. King was previously corporate vice president of financial planning and operation and CFO for the Guidance & Control Systems Sector at Litton Industries. Rockwell Scientific develops imaging sensors, electronics, optics, materials and information science products and provides E-beam lithography and semiconductor fabrication services. . . . Osman Ahmed, a senior principal engineer for Siemens Building Technologies Inc., in Buffalo Grove, Ill., has been named Inventor of the Year by his company's parent company, Siemens AG, of Germany. Ahmed's work involves research in micoelectromechanical Systems (MEMS), a specialized area of microchip technology that can combine several building automation system functions, such as sensing, wireless communication, processing and power management. Ahmed envisions buildings and homes in the not-so-distant future that will be able to "sense" the comfort level of occupants and instantly adjust settings for temperature, humidity and other environmental parameters automatically. Ahmed has applied for four separate patents related to his research team's current project--a partnership with the University of Florida -- that involves creating and monitoring a controlled wireless microenvironment for laboratory animals. . . . Annette Doyle has been named training manager for Trumpf Inc., a Farmington, Conn., producer of fabricating machinery and lasers used for industrial production technology.
