The North American Molecular Beam Epitaxy (NAMBE) organization presented the first-ever MBE Innovator Award to David Miller, a molecular beam epitaxy consultant and an adjunct professor at The Pennsylvania State University Deptartment of Electrical Engineering, at the 2003 North American Conference on Molecular Beam Epitaxy (NAMBE 2003), held recently in Boulder, Colo. The $3,000 award was co-sponsored by NAMBE and MBE equipment supplier Veeco Instruments Inc. Miller invented arsenic capping and the valved arsenic cracker while employed at the Rockwell Science Center and later at Penn State, thereby contributing to the use of MBE technology in many advanced telecom devices, the sponsors said.
