Chandra Vikram, senior research scientist and research professor at the Center for Applied Optics, The University of Alabama in Huntsville, received the 2003 Dennis Gabor Award from the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), presented at SPIE's 48th annual meeting this month, for his contributions to the science and technology of speckle metrology, particle field holography, multicolor holography, interferometry and holographic vibration analysis. . . . Steven Patterson, a professor of precision engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, has been selected as Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's new associate director for engineering. Patterson replaces Glenn Mara, who was named deputy director for operations in 2002. Two acting associate directors, Jens Mahler and Jeffrey Williams, have filled the role since then. . . . Ewing, N.J.-based Universal Display Corp., a developer of flat panel display technology, has been named to Deloitte & Touche's Technology Fast 50 Program for New Jersey, a ranking of the 50 fastest growing technology companies in the area. Rankings are based on revenue growth for fiscal years 1998 to 2002.
