Cree, Philips Cross-License Patents

DURHAM, N.C., July 20, 2010 — Cree Inc. and Royal Philips Electronics of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, announced that they have signed a comprehensive, worldwide patent cross-license agreement designed to further accelerate the growth of the LED lighting market.

The agreement covers patents from both parties in the fields of blue LED chip technology, white LEDs and phosphors, control systems, and LED luminaires and lamps. It also includes LED backlighting of liquid crystal displays and patents in the Philips LED luminaire licensing program.

The LED manufacturer will join Philips’ LED program to accelerate the adoption of LED lighting worldwide.

Glossary

backlighting: The forming of a clear silhouette of an object by placing a light source behind it. Used in machine vision when surface features of an object are not important.
liquid crystal display: An alphanumeric display formed by a layer of liquid crystal material sandwiched between two sheets of glass; a transparent conductive coating on the glass is etched to form the character segments. An applied voltage causes the appropriate segments to darken as the molecules in the liquid crystal change their arrangement.
