Companies Contract for Defense Project

Fiberstars Inc. of Fremont, Calif., and APL Engineered Materials Inc. of Urbana, Ill., have received $2.7 million in funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to develop an arc discharge light source to be used in next-generation, high-efficiency lighting for ships and other military applications. APL will head development of the light source, while Fiberstars will lead work on the optical coupling, the luminaire and the integrated illuminator.
