New Wave Research Inc. of Fremont, Calif., a manufacturer of lasers and laser-based systems for the microelectronics and analytical instrumentation industries, announced that the People's Republic of China Patent Office awarded the company patent number ZL-03-1-42382.5. The patent, titled "Scribing Sapphire Substrates with a Solid State UV Laser," covers processes and technology associated with AccuScribe, the company's blue LED wafer-scribing product line. The patent became valid Nov. 29, 2006; the company currently holds multiple patents from China, Taiwan and the US. "This new patent attests to New Wave Research's seriousness in defending its intellectual property on an international level," said Pei Hsien Fang, company CEO. "In fact, we have prevailed in all litigation cases involving copycat technology -- spanning multiple countries and continents -- and continue to monitor our markets for potential patent infringements. We will vigorously pursue our legal rights against any company that does not respect our patents." Fang said the company welcomes inquiries about licensing agreements.

Glossary
nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
sapphire
Sapphire refers to a crystalline form of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) that is used in various optical and photonic applications due to its exceptional optical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Sapphire is transparent over a wide range of wavelengths, from ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (NIR), making it suitable for optical components and devices operating in these spectral regions. In photonics, sapphire is utilized in several ways: Optical windows and lenses: Sapphire is used to...
scribing
The process of perforating a silicon or ceramic substrate with a series of tiny holes along which it will break. Nd:YAG or CO2 lasers are now routinely used.
