Capella, Lightconnect Create MEMS Alliance

ANAHEIM, Calif., March 21 -- Capella Photonics and Lightconnect announced they have created the first MEMS ROADM Alliance, to better respond to customer demands for multisourcing of wavelength selective switch modules for use in reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) and optical cross connect applications.

The goal of the alliance is to facilitate the commercial deployment of ROADMs by fostering MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) technology innovation and promoting an open architecture for wavelength management modules and subsystems. The effort was announced at OFC/NFOEC 2005, held this month in Anaheim, Calif.

Yves LeMaitre, CEO of Lightconnect, said, "Traditionally, suppliers of passive wavelength management products resisted the implementation of multisource agreements to protect their market position. However, our customers can no longer afford to develop multiple line cards or circuit packs. The optical telecom industry needs to develop solutions that will reduce costs throughout the entire supply chain: component, subsystems, systems and service providers. Lightconnect and Capella decided to spearhead this effort and invite other suppliers to join the Alliance."

Larry Schwerin, CEO of Capella Photonics, said, "With the rapid growth of broadband IP services, it is paramount for network operators to be able to dynamically manage bandwidth throughout their networks. Wavelength switching is the cornerstone element for system providers to respond to this demand. At a time where innovation comes primarily from agile and focused private companies, the MEMS ROADM alliance will provide optical system manufacturers with a secure supply of MEMS-based products while lowering overall solution costs."

Glossary
reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer
A reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) is a key component in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication networks. It allows for flexible and dynamic routing of optical signals by adding (inserting), dropping (extracting), and passing through (routing) specific wavelengths of light within an optical fiber network. The primary function of a ROADM is to manage the traffic in an optical network by selectively adding or dropping optical signals at various...
