Polaroid Corp. of Cambridge, Mass., has granted Calimetrics Inc. of Alameda, Calif., an exclusive license to its near-field embedded optics technology. Calimetrics plans to implement the technology with its own MultiLevel Recording Technology to increase the data storage capacity of optical media.

Calimetrics estimates that Polaroid's technology can increase the capacity of CDs and digital videodiscs by 2.5 to three times. It expects the combined technologies to increase the storage capacity without replacing lasers, optics or mechanical components in the base systems.
