CRLO Displays Acquires CRL Opto
FIFE, Scotland, Sept. 23 -- CRLO Displays has been formed by European investors Amadeus Capital and Doughty Hanson Technology Ventures with the acquisition of CRL Opto Ltd., a Scotland-based display technology development and licensing company, from Scipher plc, a London research and development firm specializing in displays, wireless communications and secure identification.
With $19 million in new funding from the owners, CRLO Displays will develop silicon-based microdisplays with color, high-resolution ferroelectric liquid-crystal-on-silicon technology for use in high-definition rear-projection TVs.
CRL Opto's managing director, Greg Truman, was named managing director of the new company. He is joined on the board by Barak Maoz of Amadeus and Soren Hein of Doughty Hanson.
Hein said, "The ferroelectric derivative of liquid-crystal-on-silicon has the potential to be a significant technology to deliver low-cost, high-performance flat-screen TVs in the near future. Given the rapid adoption of flat-screen TVs, this presents a major opportunity for CRLO."
