BRANFORD, Conn., May 29 -- CAS Medical Systems Inc. has been awarded a grant to further develop its near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technology for a bedside monitor of cerebral blood flow (CBF). The Phase I Small Business Innovative Research program grant is the third grant CAS has received from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)'s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for the project, "Optical Cerebral Hemodynamics Monitor."
NIRS uses a nontoxic near-infrared dye as a tracer to measure CBF; the monitoring system uses an integrated probe to simultaneously measure arterial and true brain tissue concentrations of the tracer dye.
CAS is also developing an NIRS product that determines the brain oxygenation of neonatal patients, and a similar product for adults. The products include both the sensors that are placed on the patient's forehead and the monitoring device incorporating measurement software and display.
The company makes blood pressure measurement equipment, apnea monitoring equipment and products for neonatal intensive care.
