Bruker to Acquire Michrom

BILLERICA, Mass., Feb. 25, 2011 — Bruker Corp., a provider of scientific instruments for molecular and materials research, announced it will acquire Michrom Bioresources Inc. of Auburn, Calif.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed, and the closing is expected within weeks.

The privately held company provides liquid chromatography instrumentation, accessories and consumables for applications in the life science, chemical and applied markets. It recently launched the novel Advance nanoflow ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography system and proprietary CaptiveSpray Ionization sources for coupling to mass spectrometry in proteomics and other life-science applications.

Its portfolio will complement Bruker’s mass spectrometry products, the company said.

“With Bruker’s Fremont, Calif., manufacturing infrastructure and well-developed global distribution channels, we will be able to make greater strides to provide customers with advanced analytical solutions that embody technologies based on our expertise in biochemistry and microfluidics,” said Kerry Nugent, Michrom president.

Glossary
mass spectrometry
Mass spectrometry (MS) is an analytical technique used to determine the molecular composition and structure of compounds based on their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z). It involves ionizing chemical substances to generate ions, separating these ions based on their mass-to-charge ratio using electric and magnetic fields, and detecting and quantifying these ions to create a mass spectrum. Ionization: Samples are ionized using techniques such as electron impact ionization, electrospray ionization...
microfluidics
Microfluidics is a multidisciplinary field that involves the manipulation and control of very small fluid volumes, typically in the microliter (10-6 liters) to picoliter (10-12 liters) range, within channels or devices with dimensions on the microscale. It integrates principles from physics, chemistry, engineering, and biotechnology to design and fabricate systems that handle and analyze fluids at the micro level. Key features and aspects of microfluidics include: Miniaturization:...
