Brilliance Lands Investment from PhotonVentures and Oost NL

Netherlands-based integrated laser technology startup company Brilliance has secured €2 million ($2.16 million) in seed funding from Oost NL and PhotonVentures. Brilliance’s silicon nitride-based PIC technology address the limitations of low resolution and high energy consumption in AR and VR displays by projecting sharp colorful images onto glass surfaces such as eyeglass lenses and car windows.

According to Brilliance, the company’s patented PIC technology enables it to create the smallest possible RGB laser module. Brilliance has successfully demonstrated prototype chips, developed through flip-chip technology, which, the company said, are now undergoing testing by producers of AR applications. The company’s technology delivers precise control over optical output properties, to ensure compatibility with advanced eye-tracking systems and durability through a hermetically sealed design with strategically placed electrical connections.

The company’s module additionally achieves fully integrated power monitoring and speckle reduction, and is sized at 4 by 7 mm, with a thickness of 1.5 mm.

From the funding, the company plans to further develop its current generation of proof-of-concept chips into customer specific prototypes. The company is also taking steps in the industrialization phase of its production process in anticipation of future demand.

Glossary
photonic integrated circuit
A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) is a compact and integrated device that incorporates multiple photonic components and functions on a single chip, similar to the way electronic integrated circuits (ICs) integrate various electronic components. The goal of a photonic integrated circuit is to manipulate and control light signals for applications in optical communication, sensing, signal processing, and other photonic technologies. Key points about photonic integrated circuits: Integration...
flip chip
An optical switch that controls conduction paths into and out of a junction in fiber optic and integrated optical circuits.
augmented reality
Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that integrates digital information, typically in the form of computer-generated graphics, images, or data, with the real-world environment in real-time. AR enhances the user's perception of the physical world by overlaying or combining digital content onto the user's view of the real world, often through devices like smartphones, tablets, smart glasses, or specialized AR headsets. Key features and principles of augmented reality: Real-time...
virtual reality
Virtual reality (VR) is a computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional environment or experience that can be interacted with and explored by an individual using electronic devices, such as a headset with a display. VR aims to create a sense of presence, immersing users in a computer-generated world that can be entirely fictional or a replication of the real world. It often involves the use of specialized hardware and software to provide a fully immersive and interactive experience. ...
