Biolase Patents Laser Tech for Eye Conditions

IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 14, 2013 — The US Patent and Trademark Office has issued dental laser manufacturer Biolase Inc. a patent covering the use of its laser technologies for treating eye conditions.

Patent No. 8,366,702, titled “Methods for Treating Hyperopia and Presbyopia via Laser Tunneling,” expands the laser application of previous ophthalmic patents granted to Biolase. It includes the architecture and techniques for treating ocular and related tissue sites using laser energy in conjunction with a measuring device capable of determining anatomical structure thickness. Treatment methods covered under the patent include those for the eye conditions presbyopia, glaucoma, retinal disorders and cataracts.

This is Biolase’s fourth US patent issued in this category, with three additional patents issued internationally.
