LINTHICUM, MD, May 6 -- CIENA Corp. announced that its MultiWave Sentry dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) system was approved for use in Bell Atlantic's core network. Bell Atlantic has deployed the MultiWave Sentry between two of its offices in Freehold and New Brunswick, New Jersey. CIENA believes this to be the first time that a regional Bell operating company has incorporated DWDM technology into its network for customer revenue-bearing traffic.
The companies assert that this application will pave the way toward a full optical network architecture. Currently, the MultiWave systems are providing immediate bandwidth relief for Bell Atlantic's interoffice facilities, eliminating the need for new fiber.
