LINTHICUM, MD, May 18 -- CIENA Corporation has received a contract from BellSouth for its MultiWave Sentry dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical transport system, which will provide bandwidth relief for BellSouth's long-haul interoffice facility network. CIENA's equipment was first deployed in January 1999, and has already been implemented in five states, including Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina and Florida.Dr. David Kettler, BellSouth's vice president of science and technology, indicated that BellSouth expects to deploy more DWDM systems during 1999 to accommodate the increasing demand for bandwidth while minimizing the capital expenditure required for fiber reinforcement.
