Andor Appoints ALPAO as Reseller

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 2, 2010 – Andor Technology plc of Belfast, UK, a scientific imaging, spectroscopy solutions and microscopy systems provider, has appointed ALPAO as its new value added reseller for the adaptive optics market.

The Grenoble, France-based company is a manufacturer of adaptive optics solutions, most notably for extremely sensitive wavefront sensors for research and industry applications.

Results obtained with adaptive optics in astronomy, ophthalmology and microscopy applications have shown the highly practical importance of the technique. A key requirement for such systems is the ability to rapidly and precisely correct variations in the observed optical wavefront.

The French company’s Shack-Hartmann sensor leverages the electron multiplying technology implemented by the UK-based company in its cameras. Fulfilling the most demanding adaptive optics applications, the sensor delivers a low electronic reading noise <1e- RMS and a high frame rate of up to 495 fps, offered simultaneously by the EMCCD technology from Andor.

The EMCCD detector’s sensitivity also allows it to be utilized in applications where the power level is limited for either safety reasons or to avoid destroying observed samples.

Glossary
adaptive optics
Adaptive optics (AO) is a technology used to improve the performance of optical systems by reducing the effects of atmospheric distortions. The Earth's atmosphere can cause light passing through it to experience distortions, resulting in image blurring and degradation in various optical applications, such as astronomical observations, laser communications, and imaging systems. Adaptive optics systems actively adjust the optical elements in real-time to compensate for these distortions. Key...
astronomy
The scientific observation of celestial radiation that has reached the vicinity of Earth, and the interpretation of these observations to determine the characteristics of the extraterrestrial bodies and phenomena that have emitted the radiation.
ophthalmology
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the anatomy, physiology, and diseases of the eyes and visual system. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of eye disorders and diseases. They are trained to provide comprehensive eye care, including medical, surgical, and optical interventions. Key areas within ophthalmology include: General eye care: Ophthalmologists perform routine eye examinations to assess visual acuity,...
