Agreements boost health of medical photonics

The medical photonics industry got a little stronger recently, thanks to business deals that will expand the portfolios of two Massachusetts companies. Excelitas Technologies of Waltham acquired Carsan Engineering of Golden, Colo., and Boston Scientific Corp. of Natick renewed an exclusive deal with Lumenis Ltd. of Yokneam, Israel.

Carsan Engineering was a privately held manufacturer of arc lamp power supplies for the medical and dental markets, and the acquisition allows Excelitas to add to its lighting offerings. The transaction increases the array of power supplies in Excelitas’ portfolio of lighting solutions for medical and dental original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Carsan’s newest 400-W product is highly differentiated and is gaining interest in the medical and dental markets, the company said.

Excelitas Technologies provides customized lighting, detection and other technology solutions to OEMs for their medical lighting, analytical instrumentation, clinical diagnostics and defense applications.

Boston Scientific, a medical device maker, and medical laser company Lumenis signed a five-year contract to extend their commercial agreement and to promote continued investments in laser and fiber product development for urologic applications.

Under the agreement, Boston Scientific will continue as the exclusive US distributor for the Israeli company’s holmium laser fibers, designed for use with surgical lasers to treat various urologic conditions.

Lumenis manufactures and distributes laser and light-based devices for surgical, ophthalmic and aesthetic applications. “Together, we offer urologists and their patients a comprehensive set of cost-effective solutions,” said Robert Di Silvio, senior vice president and president of Lumenis Americas.
