Organic materials are part of our everyday life, but only recently have photonic devices begun to exploit their versatility. For more than 20 years it was common knowledge that organic crystals exhibited electroluminescence when large voltages were applied across them. However, it took the emergence of devices responsive to low voltages to kindle the current interest in organic electroluminescence, and this interest should produce successful applications in many areas in the coming decade.
