Edmund Optics Acquires son-x

Edmund Optics has acquired son-x, a developer of ultrasonic assist systems and high precision optics manufacturing. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Fraunhofer spin-off son-x was founded in 2011. son-x is the developer of an ultrasonic-assisted diamond turning technology used for ultra-precise optics manufacturing. The company produces metallic mirrors used in the semiconductor, satellite, and defense sectors, as well as infrared optics. According to son-x, quantities range from one-off production for prototypes to series production of several thousand mirrors per year.

Integrating son-x’s expertise and resources, Edmund said, will enable it to produce multi-axis machined (up to 5-axis) high complex surfaces from 1 mm up to 1 m.
