Optical Services Market Growth Predicted

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., May 2 -- The market for services provisioned over optically based circuits will grow from $2.08 billion in 2003 to $4.62 billion in 2006, according to CIR, an industry analyst firm, in its report on retail and wholesale bandwidth services opportunities for carriers operating in the US.

"SONET based OC-n services will dominate the overall market, with close to a 60 percent for the next four years, as wavelengths have not eaten into SONET private lines the way some start-ups said they would during the optical boom." CIR said. CIR said it did find that wavelength services in both the wholesale and retail markets will enjoy reasonable growth opportunities starting in 2003, with total sales of $353 million, reaching $800 million in 2006.

"While these figures do not reflect the convention market hype of 2001 that saw obscene market predictions of $8 billion wavelength services markets based on noncorrelated events like growth in total US population, instead of termination points within carrier POPs, the numbers do point to an upward trend worth watching," the company said.
