An IR nerve stimulator designed for medical research and scientific applications has been unveiled by Aculight Corp. The Capella R-1850 penetrates tissue to a depth of 300 to 600 μm and has a stimulation duration of 10 μs to 20 ms. Its emission wavelength is ~1850 nm, and the device has a maximum optical pulse energy of 5 mJ at 1 ms. The company says that there is no contact damage to the nerve. The instrument is not intended for use on humans.
