About This Webinar
Microdisplays are essential for wearable AR/VR/MR devices, such as smart glasses. Emissive microdisplays, such as OLEDs or micro-LEDs, provide significant advantages in terms of form factor and power consumption versus their non-emissive counterparts, such as liquid crystal on silicon and digital light processing technology. OLED microdisplays are already prominent in various professional and consumer near-to-eye visualization devices, assisted-reality wearables, and electronic viewfinders. The underlying OLED-on-silicon and CMOS technology has reached industry maturity, mostly in microdisplays, but also in embedded opto-electronic sensing features in devices.

Uwe Vogel of Fraunhofer IPMS discusses achievements in high-resolution and ultralow power OLED microdisplay and sensing devices, their backplane integrated circuit (IC) design architectures, as well as OLED-on-silicon frontplane process technology. He considers micro-LEDs as upcoming options for very high-brightness applications and compares them to OLEDs in terms of application requirements and performance features.

Who should attend:
Engineers, manufacturers, and designers who are working with microdisplays, AR/VR/MR, or embedded sensing. Those who use displays, imaging, LEDs, and optical components in industries such as aerospace, automotive, consumer, defense, machine vision, medicine, and semiconductors.

About the presenter:
Uwe Vogel, Ph.D., is the division unit director for microdisplays and sensors at Fraunhofer IPMS. He earned his degree in information technology at Technische Universität (TU) Chemnitz and his doctorate in biomedical engineering at TU Dresden. He has been employed at Fraunhofer since 1998, initially as analog IC designer then as head of the analog/mixed-signal IC design group, before starting his current role in 2010. Vogel has received the IAESTE Fellowship at the Center for Applied Optics Studies, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology as well as a research fellowship from Konkuk University in South Korea. His main areas of study include optoelectronics, microdisplays for near-to-eye displays and VR, display driver IC, and biomedical applications.
