About This Webinar
Optical design concepts used to be “simple.” Designers either ran ray tracing for macroscopic optics or simulated very small domains rigorously. With the arrival of micro- and nano-optical elements in larger optical systems, the two-dimensional domains have become intertwined. Micro- and macro-optics are being married in cases where high performance in a small footprint is required. Imaging and beam shaping can be combined in new ways with hundreds of multichannel micro-optics.

These channels are similar but not identical, which creates challenges for both simulation and design. Visualizing and minimizing speckles and diffraction is possible because users do not like either one. Noell covers the combination of coherent sources with micro- and macro-optics and high-M² lasers when exiting multimode fibers. He explains the simulation of micro-optics and provides an overview of their advantages in data/telecom, imaging, laser machining, and automotive applications.

About the presenter

Wilfried NoellWilfried Noell, Ph.D., earned a doctorate in physics and is the research and development director at SUSS MicroOptics SA. He is responsible, along with his dedicated team of scientists and engineers, for R&D projects, advanced technology, optical designs, and special client requests. Before joining SUSS MicroOptics, Noell was an R&D scientist and process engineer in the industrial x-ray business unit of the Comet Group in Switzerland. From 1994 to 2012, he worked on InP PICs, silicon photonics (SiPh), Optical MEMS (MOEMS) and MEMS actuators at TU Darmstadt, IMM Mainz, IMT/Uni Neuchâtel, and EPFL in Switzerland, respectively. Since 2021, Noell has been a member of the Swiss NTN Photonics Innovation Board.
