Vision Research - Ultrafast Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) with Phantom High-Speed CameraOptical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive/nondestructive imaging technique. Filling a unique gap between the use of ultrasound (for great imaging depth) and confocal microscopy (for great spatial resolution), OCT has proven incredibly revealing in biomedical applications such as ophthalmology and laryngology. The creation of two- or three-dimensional in-vivo visualizations of tissue structure is now possible with this technique.

Only in recent years have researchers begun to integrate high-speed cameras (i.e., CMOS sensors) into these setups and instruments. By using the high throughput of Phantom cameras, this technology provides exceptional data acquisition in milliseconds, surpassing the far slower traditional scanning OCT methods. Unlike conventional approaches relying on single-point detectors and galvanometer scanners, the integrated system eliminates the need for mechanical scanning and streamlines the imaging process. High-speed OCT-based systems have even been investigated with the newer Phantom Machine Vision cameras, which offer the ability to perform ultra-long record times and/or the ability to do real-time image analysis.

The introduction of holographic OCT, featuring a swept-source laser on a sensor array, elevates data acquisition to unprecedented speeds. For instance, researchers [Atlan, et al.] have unveiled an advanced real-time holographic retinal blood flow imaging instrument, powered by a Phantom S710 streaming camera. It enables real-time Doppler image calculations from a continuous stream of high-resolution interferograms, recorded at an impressive 4000 frames per second.

The image rendering process, incorporating Fresnel transformation and local principal component analysis filtering, achieves a remarkable temporal resolution of 125 rendered frames per second. Groundbreaking results demonstrate successful real-time imaging of blood flow in iris arteries and veins, permitting researchers to identify crucial anatomical landmarks and observe arterial pulse waves and venous flow in vessels of varying sizes, highlighting the system's versatility.

In conclusion, the power of integrating Phantom high-speed cameras into interferometry workflows represents a paradigm shift in noninvasive medical imaging.
