Dispersive prisms are used in spectrometers because of the breakdown of the light into its composite wavelengths. This would then aid the determination of the refractive index of a material, or the transmission of a filter, for example. There are many different types of prisms available. Some of these can be coated with AR coatings or mirror coatings to improve transmission or reflection.
