Fast Phase Modulator Is World's Most Compact Using electro-optical signals rather than traditional electrical signals could make the exchange of digital information more efficient. Researchers from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany have developed an electro-optical device 29 µm long that converts signals at a rate of about 40 Gb/s, making it the world’s most compact high-speed phase modulator.
