Coating Provides 'IR Camouflage' Coating Provides ‘IR Camouflage’
Military camouflage has taken a step forward with the discovery of a coating that, when heated past a certain temperature, looks colder to thermal cameras. Principal investigator Federico Capasso of Harvard University predicts that, with only small adjustments, the coating could be used as a new type of thermal camouflage or as a kind of encrypted beacon to allow soldiers to covertly communicate their locations in the field.

Innovation Photonics - Mid-IR Optical Isolators Mid-IR Optical Isolators
Innovation Photonics
Quantum cascade lasers can be troubled by feedback. InnPho’s optical isolators prevent reflections (feedback) from returning back into the laser. Now in production are wavelength-tunable mid-IR optical isolators operating at center wavelengths of 4.5 µm, 8 µm and 10.6 µm. Typical transmission of ~90% and isolation of 500:1 to 1000:1.

Rare-Earth Doped Fibers for Use in Fiber Lasers and Amplifiers

Monday, November 4, 2013 1:00 p.m. EST

FREE WEBINAR

The advances in performance of fiber lasers have been dramatic in the past 10 years, making fiber lasers a commercial business worth more than $500 Million per year. All of this is made possible by the unique performance attributes of rare-earth doped silica fibers, which are at the heart of each of these laser systems. In this webinar, we will describe the key parameters of these fibers, including the use of large-mode-area (LMA) fibers for high-power CW lasers as well as pulsed fiber lasers, along with the key other fiber-based components needed to make a fiber laser. The common rare-earth dopants for silica fibers, namely Ytterbium, Erbium, Thulium and Holmium, will also be described, along with some of the commercially relevant devices that are enabled by these fibers.

Raman Scattering Sped Up for Microscopy
Improvements to Raman spectroscopy using laser frequency combs allow multiple signals from different parts of a molecule — or even different molecules — to be monitored simultaneously using a single detector. The advance is seen as a major step toward the holy grail of real-time, label-free biomolecular imaging.

Matrox Imaging - Color Machine Vision Color Machine Vision
Matrox Imaging

Color machine vision’s increasing popularity can be attributed to the prevalence of digital cameras with color image sensors, the computing power and interfaces necessary to handle data from color images, and the fact that more users are becoming familiar with machine vision technology. These factors combine to make color machine vision an area of mounting interest, which despite its challenges, provides unique benefits to manufacturing control and inspection.
