Optical Fiber Brings Universal Quantum Computing Closer
Optical Fiber Brings Universal Quantum Computing Closer
Physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) measured and controlled a superconducting qubit using optical fiber, rather than metal electrical wires. The work moves toward a universal quantum computer capable of solving the most difficult equations, which is estimated to require about 1 million qubits.

Atomic Lattice Excitation Yields Understanding of Quantum Dots’ Limits
At low energy levels, quantum dots are able to absorb light and convert it to a different color at nearly 100% efficiency. At higher excitation energies, required for brighter screens and other technologies, the level of efficiency drops dramatically. The conclusions are a result of experimentation conducted by researchers at the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

From the Design Lab to the Factory Floor: How Optics Manufacturers Move Swiftly from Concept to Creation KEYNOTE: “From the Design Lab to the Factory Floor: How Optics Manufacturers Move Swiftly from Concept to Creation”

Presented by: Ulrike Fuchs, asphericon

Ulrike Fuchs, vice president of strategy and innovation at asphericon GmbH, keynotes the Photonics Spectra Optics Conference, a virtual showcase featuring more than a dozen presentations on pertinent topics in the field of optics. Fuchs’ session will provide an in-depth look at the manufacture of optical components and systems, and the detailed processes needed to move from concept to creation across products and technologies.

Fuchs’ keynote will be available live starting at 11 a.m. on April 27.

Additional sessions will include an optics market analysis on the effects of COVID-19, from Tom Hausken, senior industry adviser at The Optical Society (OSA); “Designing Optical Assemblies for Manufacturability,” from Edmund Optics’ Katie Schwertz; and “3D-Printed Freeform VIRGO Optics,” from NanoVox's James Field.

The two-day Photonics Spectra Optics Conference runs April 27-28. Registration is free for the event, which is offered exclusively online. For more information and registration, please visit www.photonics.com/pso2021. Continued coverage of this inaugural event will also be available on Photonics.com leading up to the conference.
