Microphone Listens with Light Microphone Listens with Light
The sensitivity of the optical position sensor developed at SINTEF’s MiNaLab is based on the optical phenomena of interference and diffraction. Exploiting this combination enabled researchers to use the sensor to measure movement of less than the diameter of an atom. Enabled by this technology, a microphone will be able to “see where the sound comes from, pick up the voice of the person speaking, and filter out other sources of noise in the room,” said Matthieu Lacolle, an information and communication technology researcher at SINTEF.

DataRay Inc. - Real-time Profiling for Focusing, M2, Divergence & Alignment Real-time Profiling for Focusing, M2, Divergence & Alignment
DataRay Inc.

Beam intensity profiling is an essential tool in many aspects of photonics. The precise intensity distribution in a focused laser beam is critical in many applications: flow cytometry, laser printing, medical lasers, and cutting lasers are just a few examples. Intensity profile measurements can characterize and improve a product or process, leading to substantial cost and time savings that can pay for the measurement instrument many times over. This white paper describes how the unique, patented, real-time multiple z-plane XYZTF capabilities of the BeamMap2 slit-scan profiler can speed and simplify laser assembly alignment.

Raman Spectroscopy for Research and Industry
Monday, June 24, 2013 – 1 p.m. EST/10 a.m. PST

Photonics Media will host David J. Brady, the Michael J. Fitzpatrick Endowed Professor of Photonics at Duke University, where he leads the Duke Imaging and Spectroscopy Program. He will discuss “Computational and Compressive Raman Spectroscopy,” reviewing coded aperture, multiwavelength and diffuse illumination Raman system design for ultraviolet, visible and SWIR systems. Brady also will discuss compressive sampling for infrared Raman spectroscopy.

Photonics Media also will host Dr. Prasant Potuluri, CEO and co-founder of Centice. He will present a “Review of Key Applications of Raman Spectroscopy” to include identification of narcotics and explosives, counterfeit drug detection, quality control, raw material identification and manufacturing process improvements. Dr. Potuluri also will discuss some limitations of Raman spectroscopy and opportunities for improvement.

Aerotech - Nmark AGV Galvanometers
Nmark AGV galvanometers use innovative optical feedback technology to increase resolution to greater than 24 bits, compared with the 16 or 20 bits achieved by other high-end scanners for laser micromachining applications. The result is a significant improvement in accuracy: A 100-mm focal length lens has 2-D positioning accuracies of 10 µm or better.
