Electronic Chips Heal After Laser Blasts
Catastrophic failure in the "brains" of smartphones and other electronics could be a thing of the past, now that engineers at California Institute of Technology have demonstrated an integrated circuit that heals itself, even after half of its components are vaporized using a high-power laser. “It felt like we were witnessing the next step in the evolution of integrated circuits,” said Caltech's Ali Hajimiri of the first time the chip developed a work-around in less than a second. “We had literally just blasted half the amplifier and vaporized many of its components, such as transistors, and it was able to recover to nearly its ideal performance.” |
