Handheld System Images Children’s Retinas
A handheld device capable of capturing images of a retina with cellular resolution allows researchers to gather detailed structural information about the eyes of infants and toddlers for the first time.
"Diagnostic tools that examine and image the retina have been well-designed for adults, but are exceedingly difficult to use in infants and young children who can't hold the required position or focus for long enough periods of time," said Cynthia Toth, professor of ophthalmology and biomedical engineering at Duke University.

Plasmonic Nanoheaters Enable Photothermal Cancer Therapy
In vitro and in vivo studies have positively correlated the heat generation of plasmonic nanoparticles with their potential as cancer-killing agents. Using a single-particle and positron emission tomography (PET)-based platform, researchers from the University of Copenhagen quantified the photothermal efficiency of near-infrared (NIR) resonant silica-gold nanoshells (AuNSs) and benchmarked this against the heating of colloidal spherical, solid gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The researchers reported that both in vitro and in vivo (with live mice as subjects), the heat generation of the resonant AuNSs performed better than nonresonant AuNPs.

Periodic Photonic Structures Focus Spaser Light for Nanoscale Optics
Single-mode operation in plasmonic lasers has been demonstrated using a technique that implements distributed feedback (DFB) in a novel way that couples the resonant surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode of the laser to a highly directional far-field radiation pattern and integrates hybrid SPPs in the surrounding medium into the laser’s operation.
