Luminescent Nanoparticles Advance Smart Glass Technology
A method for embedding light-emitting nanoparticles into glass without losing any of their unique properties could be a major step toward smart glass applications, such as 3D volumetric displays, biomedical imaging systems and remote radiation sensors. The "hybrid glass" combines the properties of novel lanthanide-containing upconversion nanoparticles with well-known aspects of glass, such as transparency and the ability to be processed into various shapes including fine optical fiber.

Heat from Laser Ablation May Treat Cancer Safely, Effectively
A novel fusion-imaging technique uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to guide the insertion of a laser fiber into a cancerous tumor. The laser, once inserted, applies heat to the cancerous tissue, destroying it. This technique, known as MRI-guided focal laser ablation, could improve treatment options and outcomes for men with prostate cancer.

Coded Access Optical Sensor Camera Surpasses CMOS/CCD Performance
A camera technology dubbed Coded Access Optical Sensor (CAOS) now works in unison with CCD and CMOS camera sensors to extract previously unseen images. The CCD sensor camera — a technology that earned its inventors a Nobel Prize in 2009 — and CMOS sensor camera, and dominate imaging applications from medicine to industrial testing and machine vision to astronomy. Now researchers from University College Cork, led by professor Nabeel Riza, have demonstrated a CAOS-CMOS design that combines the CAOS imager platform with a CMOS multipixel optical sensor.

Pyrometric Imaging System Captures Multiple Explosion Parameters
A technique involving high-speed, high-fidelity imaging with optical filtering and signal processing techniques may make setting off explosives and capturing the data in real time a reasonable alternative to developing a theoretical simulations to test explosives. Research chemist Kevin McNesby and colleagues at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Los Alamos National Laboratory have developed an optical technique to image explosions in high resolution.

New Optics Drawings Standards
Thu, Jun 30, 2016 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM EDT
Dave Aikens, the leader of the project to adopt ISO 10110 as an American National Standard, will provide an introduction of OP1.0110, the American National Standard for optics drawings. He will discuss the format of the drawings, as well as an overview of the tolerance notations for things like glass parameters, surface wave front, imperfections and texture. He will also explain how OP1.0110 differs from ISO 10110 and provide insight into how both standards will change in the coming decade.
