Artificial Dielectric-Based Lens Enables Efficient Terahertz-Wave Control
Future terahertz-wave devices for communications and imaging could benefit from a lens based on artificial dielectrics. Terahertz radiation (about 100 to 10,000 GHz) is a relatively unexplored slice of the electromagnetic spectrum but it holds the promise of countless new imaging applications, as well as wireless communication networks with extremely high bandwidth. However, few off-the-shelf components are available for manipulating terahertz waves.

LED Fishing Nets Reduce Sea Turtle Deaths
LED Fishing Nets Reduce Sea Turtle Deaths
Using LEDs to illuminate fishing nets has been shown to be a cost-effective means of dramatically reducing the number of sea turtle deaths resulting from entanglement with nets. Researchers from the University of Exeter and the Darwin Initiative executed the study in Sechura Bay, Peru. They found that attaching green LEDs to gillnets used by a small-scale fishery reduced the number of green turtle deaths by 64 percent without reducing the intended-catch size.

Beam Me Up, Scotty!
Beam Me Up, Scotty!
On this month's show, we discover that teleporting is more than just science fiction - that's according to physicists at the University of Jena in Germany who have, for the first time, demonstrated that teleportation of elementary particles is actually possible. Photonics Media Managing Editor Michael Wheeler discusses technology inspired by the biological systems of octopuses and other cephalopods; and he offers a preview of the upcoming April issue of Photonics Spectra. We also learn how the photonics industry in Rochester, N.Y., is continuing to expand.
