Atom Optics Comes of Age
Atom Optics Comes of Age NASA is funding atom interferometry, a variation on the 200-year-old optical technique, in the belief that the emerging, highly precise measurement technology will allow the detection of ripples in space-time and other imperceptible events. NASA Goddard Space Flight Center will work on the project with Stanford University and AOSense Inc. "I've been following this technology for a decade," said NASA Goddard's Bernie Seery. "The technology has come of age. With this funding and other support, we can move ahead more quickly now."

Photonics Media's Weekly Newscast In this week’s edition of the industry's premier weekly newscast: twisted light is created on a chip, self-cleaning waterproof optics are pursued, atom optics comes of age, superparticles are shaped from nanorods, and we bring you some notable business news. Hosted by Photonics Media’s Melinda Rose and Ashley Rice.

Optical Vortex Beams Emit on Silicon
The smallest emitter of orbital angular momentum (OAM) light — light that travels in a twisting, corkscrew-like manner — was created on silicon. The chip is one thousand times smaller than any other such device reported to date and could be used in optoelectronics and communications technology.
