Exploring the City by the Bay
San Francisco, home to SPIE Photonics West – the industry’s largest conference and exposition – is a city of neighborhoods. In this issue of Sneak Preview – Photonics West Edition #1 – Photonics Media Senior Editor Justine Murphy explores some of what makes this town so distinctive and exciting.
In the mid-1800s San Francisco got a bit of a kick-start when it became the central port and depot of the west’s initial Gold Rush frenzy. The infamous earthquake and subsequent fires of 1906 destroyed much of the city, but it was rebuilt rather quickly and by the 1930s it was growing exponentially into outlying neighborhoods.

High-Resolution Spectrum Analyzer
From: BRISTOL INSTRUMENTS, INC.
The model 771 operates as a high-resolution spectrum analyzer and a high-accuracy wavelength meter for CW and high-repetition-rate pulsed lasers. A spectrum is measured to a resolution as high as 2 GHz and OSNR is measured to >40 dB. The system’s wavelength accuracy is as high as ± 0.0001 nm, guaranteed by continuous calibration with a built-in wavelength standard. Operation is available from 375 nm to 12 μm.

Hyperspectral Cameras
From: PHOTONFOCUS AG
In its 15th anniversary, Photonfocus presents two new hyperspectral cameras to work from 600 to 1000 nm. The HS01 camera incorporates a linescan sensor with over 100 narrow bands and the HS02 has a mosaic sensor which provides 25 images with 25 bands. Their FPGA pre-processing and their A/B shaft encoder interface (RS-422 or HTL levels) make them your best partner to face the most demanding applications for material processing.

All-In-One Beam Steering System
From: NEW SCALE TECHNOLOGIES
This new miniature beam steering system enables smaller instruments. The rotary piezo smart stage has a familiar galvo form factor, but dramatically smaller size: just 12 mm diameter including the built-in closed-loop controller. Developer’s kits are available for one-axis mirror positioning and two-axis beam steering systems. Mirrors move +/-20° for precise point-to-point positioning of beams up to 2 mm diameter or dynamic scanning to 100 Hz.
