Photonics West 2013
The flagship annual event for the photonics industry, SPIE Photonics West, will feature 4400 papers, 18 plenary presentations, 40 technical events, 70 courses, and 1300 exhibitors when it takes place from Feb. 2-8, 2013 in San Francisco. The weeklong event kicks off with SPIE BiOS, where the latest information on biomedical optics, diagnostics and therapeutics, biophotonics, molecular imaging, optical microscopy, optical coherence tomography, and optogenetics is presented and discussed.
Photonics West conferences include Lasers and Sources (LASE): laser source engineering, high-power laser manufacturing, nonlinear optics, semiconductor lasers and LEDs, laser micro-/nanoengineering, laser applications; Optoelectronic Devices and Materials (OPTO): optoelectronic materials and devices, photonic integration, nanotechnologies in photonics, advanced quantum and optoelectronic applications, semiconductor lasers and LEDs, displays and holography, optical communications: devices to systems; MOEMS-MEMS: micro- and nano fabricated electromechanical and optical components, micro/nanofabrication, devices, applications, reliability; and Green Photonics: solid-state lighting and displays, laser-assisted manufacturing and micro/nano fabrication, communications, renewable energy generation: fusion and photovoltaics.
Industry-focused Events
Special industry-focused panels at SPIE Photonics West 2013 include the topics of silicon photonics, emerging growth opportunities in sustainable technology, and an executive roundtable on the world of optics and photonics.
Silicon Photonics and Photonic Integrated Circuits, moderated by SPIE Director of Marketing and Industry Relations Peter Hallett, Tuesday Feb. 5, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Emerging Growth Opportunities in Sustainable Technology, moderated by Stephen J. Eglash, director of the Precourt Institute for Energy at Stanford University, Tuesday, Feb. 5, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Executive Perspectives on the World of Optics and Photonics, moderated by SPIE Industry and Market Strategist Stephen G. Anderson, Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Professional Development
Have an idea for a technical business? Are you engaging in career exploration, or need to make your current work more relevant? Then you should attend "From the Bench to the Marketplace," a series of talks and discussions that explore topics in innovation and entrepreneurship. Get inspired to create the next big thing and learn how to make it happen. These talks are designed for students and early career professionals, but all are welcome. Sessions include: Technology Entrepreneur: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, with Bill Parker, CEO of Creative Microsystems Corp.; Opportunity Recognition: Identifying Promising Paths for Your Career and Your Start-up, with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory spin-out RAPT Industries Co-founder Peter S. Fiske; and Using 21st Century Methods to Find Funding with Open Photonics CEO Jason Eichenholz.
From the Bench to the Marketplace, Sunday, Feb. 3, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
