Photonics West 2013

SPIE Photonics West 2013 – begins Feb. 2 with SPIE BiOS, where the latest information on biomedical optics, diagnostics and therapeutics, biophotonics, molecular imaging, optical microscopy, optical coherence tomography, and optogenetics is presented and discussed.

This year BiOS will feature 2000 presentations in the areas of photonic therapeutics and diagnostics; clinical technologies and systems; tissue optics, laser-tissue interaction, and tissue engineering; biomedical spectroscopy, microscopy, and imaging; and nano/biophotonics. The BiOS Expo (Saturday and Sunday) is where 235 companies show-off their latest devices, components, and instrumentation for diagnostics and therapeutics.

The BiOS Hot Topics session (Saturday, Feb. 2, 7-9 p.m.) this year will include: optogenetics and hybrid-optical control of cells, MEMs-tunable VCSEL technology for ultrahigh-Speed OCT, patterned multiphoton photoactivation in scattering tissue by temporal focusing, clinical requirements for optical imaging in medical robotics, camera-based functional imaging of tissue hemodynamics, multiwave approach to elasticity imaging for cancer detection, functional optical imaging of the brain, and photoacoustic flow cytometry.

» The Main Event

SPIE Photonics West 2013, the flagship annual event for the photonics industry, will feature 4400 papers, 18 plenary presentations, 40 technical events, 70 courses, and 1300 exhibitors. Conferences include Lasers and Sources (LASE): laser source engineering, high-power laser manufacturing, nonlinear optics, semiconductor lasers and LEDs, laser micro-/nanoengineering, laser applications; Optoelectronic Devices and Materials (OPTO): optoelectronic materials and devices, photonic integration, nanotechnologies in photonics, advanced quantum and optoelectronic applications, semiconductor lasers and LEDs, displays and holography, optical communications: devices to systems; MOEMS-MEMS: micro- and nano fabricated electromechanical and optical components, micro/nanofabrication, devices, applications, reliability; and Green Photonics: solid-state lighting and displays, laser-assisted manufacturing and micro/nano fabrication, communications, renewable energy generation: fusion and photovoltaics.

» Start-up Challenge

The 2013 SPIE Startup Challenge, a photonics business pitch competition, has become an annual opportunity to see early-stage innovation in progress. Ten finalists will present their three-minute pitches to a panel of judges on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 3:30-5 p.m., followed by announcement of winners and a reception. The finalist presentation is open to the public with free registration.

Pitches will showcase optics or photonics technologies or applications presented as the basis for viable new businesses. The focus is on new businesses and potential startups, so established companies must be pre-revenue at the time of the competition.
