polycrystal

A substance that transmits the infrared, but which is too delicate or fragile to be used in the form of a single crystal. Instead, the pure material is finely ground, pressed to the required shape, then heated under great pressure until it almost melts. The result is a material that retains all the optical properties of the original crystal but is rugged enough to withstand rough handling.
