nematic phase

A form of liquid crystal with an appearance of moving, threadlike structures, particularly visible when observed in thick specimens with polarized light. During this phase, the molecules of the crystal are parallel and able to travel past each other following the direction of their longitudinal axes. This form has one optical axis that occupies the direction of an applied magnetic field.
