moiré deflectometry

An optical interference technique widely utilized as a method of nondestructive testing when determining the ray deflection and the modulation transfer function (MTF) of an optical system associated with an object of interest. Two gratings of equal pitch are separated and the rear grating is superimposed upon the shadow cast by the front grating, forming a moiré fringe pattern. By varying the gap between the gratings, different sensitivities can be obtained which further characterize the object of interest.
