error correcting code

The addition to the information signal in communications of redundant bits that enable the originally encoded message to be decoded without degradation of the data. In compact disc technology, the code is known as cross-interleaved Reed-Solomon code (CIRC). Similar concepts in other formats detect errors and initiate a request for retransmission of the erroneous data, or indicate that data is in error upon delivery. These are known as error detecting codes (EDC).
