cresyl violet

Cresyl violet, also known as cresyl violet acetate or cresyl echt violet, is a synthetic organic compound belonging to the class of triarylmethane dyes. It is commonly used in histology and microscopy as a staining agent to selectively stain components of nerve cells, such as Nissl bodies (rough endoplasmic reticulum), which are involved in protein synthesis. Cresyl violet stains these structures purple-blue, allowing for their visualization under a microscope. This dye is particularly useful in neuroscience research for studying the morphology and distribution of neurons in tissues, aiding in the identification and analysis of neuronal populations and their connections.
