Agri-photonics refers to the application of photonics technologies in agriculture. Photonics involves the generation, manipulation, and detection of light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. In the context of agriculture, agri-photonics encompasses various techniques and technologies that utilize light or photons for tasks such as monitoring plant growth, assessing crop health, optimizing agricultural processes, and improving yield and quality.

Agri-photonics applications may include:

Remote sensing: Using satellite or aerial imagery, often captured in various spectral bands including visible, near-infrared, and thermal infrared, to monitor crop health, estimate yields, detect pests or diseases, and assess environmental conditions such as soil moisture content.

Hyperspectral imaging: Employing high-resolution imaging systems capable of capturing spectral information for each pixel in an image, allowing for detailed analysis of plant health, nutrient content, and stress levels.

Optical sorting and grading:
Implementing optical sorting and grading systems to classify agricultural products based on quality, size, ripeness, or other characteristics, enhancing efficiency in processing and packaging operations.

Photonics-assisted precision agriculture: Integrating photonics technologies with precision agriculture techniques, such as GPS-guided machinery and variable rate application systems, to optimize resource use, minimize environmental impact, and increase overall productivity.
