Photonics Dictionary

actinic

Actinic refers to the property of radiation, particularly ultraviolet (UV) light, that can cause photochemical reactions.

Radiation: Actinic radiation typically involves UV light but can also include some visible and near-infrared light. This type of radiation has enough energy to cause chemical changes.

Photochemical reactions: Actinic light can induce chemical reactions, such as those that occur in photography, photolithography, and various medical and scientific processes.

Applications:

Photography: Actinic light is crucial in the exposure of photographic films and papers.

Medicine: It is used in treatments like phototherapy for skin conditions.

Industrial processes: Utilized in curing inks, coatings, and adhesives that harden when exposed to UV light.

Prolonged exposure to actinic light can cause damage to skin and eyes, leading to sunburn or other adverse effects.
