Photonics engineering (Science and technology of light). Engineering students specializing in Photonics  are trained to have the skills to design, develop, and implement systems functioning primarily with optical and optoelectronic technologies, to use these systems within their electronic and software operating environments. Graduates can work in all fields where modern photonics are actively used including telecommunications, imaging, visual technology, diagnostics and optical measurements, industrial instrumentation and metrology.

Photonics Master's - The objective of this specialized Photonics Master's is to provide students with high-level scientific and technical photonics qualification (at baccalaureat + 5 yrs of studies level). Four Breton Engineering schools - Enib, Enssat, Rennes Insa, and IMT-Atlantique - as well as two universities - Bretagne Occidentale University and Rennes 1 University - have combined resources in order to offer this advanced photonics training course simultaneously in Brest, Lannion and Rennes with three specialized options: Optic telecommunications, Nanophotonics, living sciences and environmental photonics.

Foton Institute - The Foton Institute ("Fonctions Optiques pour les Technologies de l'information" or Optical functions for Information Technologies) is the laboratory where ENSSAT's teacher/researchers specialized in the field of photonics do their research. It is a Research Unit managed by the CNRS (National Scientific Research Centre) and the Rennes University (Univ. Rennes), where teams of researchers from ENSSAT work alongside researchers from the IUT (University Institute of Technology) in Lannion, University of Rennes 1 and Rennes INSA (National Institute of Applied Sciences) in Rennes. Foton's topics of interest range from new materials used in the field of integrated fibre optics and/or photonic components to laser physics, complex optical functions and optoelectronic sensors, covering a wide field of telecommunications optical layer "from the atom to telecommunications systems," as well as skills in related areas of the Photonics Key-Enabling-Technology as defense, life sciences, industry, and energy.
