Glossary
  • photometer A device used to compare the luminous intensities of two sources by comparing the illuminance they produce.
  • illuminance Luminous flux incident per unit area of a surface; luminous incidence. (The use of the term "illumination" for this quantity conflicts with its more general meaning.)
  • luminous intensity Luminous flux emitted by a source in a given range of directions; the unit of measure is the lumen/steradian, now known as the candela.
  • light Electromagnetic radiation detectable by the eye, ranging in wavelength from about 400 to 750 nm. In photonic applications light can be considered to cover the nonvisible portion of the spectrum which includes the ultraviolet and the infrared.
