Optica MRS, SPIE Name 2023-24 Congressional Fellows: People in the News: 06/28/23

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 28, 2023 — Optica, the Materials Research Society (MRS), and SPIE have named the 2023-2024 Congressional Science and Engineering Fellows. Claire Cody will serve as the Arthur H. Guenther Congressional Fellow, co-sponsored by Optica and SPIE, and Marie Fiori will serve as the Optica/MRS Congressional Fellow. Cody will graduate with a Ph.D. in chemistry from Yale University this summer. Fiori holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The two will begin their terms as fellows in September. Congressional Fellows serve a one-year term as special legislative assistants for a member of the U.S. Congress or for a congressional committee.Claire Cody, Arthur H. CORNING, N.Y. — Corning has added Thomas D. French, former senior partner and current senior partner emeritus with McKinsey & Company, to its board of directors. French will serve on the board’s audit committee as well as its corporate responsibility and sustainability committee. He will hold office until Corning’s annual meeting of shareholders in the spring of 2024, at which time he will stand for election to a one-year term. His appointment brings the number of Corning directors to 16.

EDINBURGH, Scotland — High-performance laser technology company Skylark Lasers has named Ben Szutor as CEO. Szutor previously worked for UniKLasers, joining through the engineering doctorate program and rising to technology manager. He holds a master’s degree in engineering from the University of Edinburgh and an engineering Ph.D. in applied photonics from Heriot-Watt University.
