Aperture Filter Coatings to Minimize Optical Scatter and Weight for Spacecraft
Optical system based designs must take overall system level considerations into account. If you are looking to manage optical scattering or reduce the number of components to manage overall system weight, a patterned aperture coating is your solution. DSI designs and manufactures thin film coatings such as bandpasses, beamsplitters, ARs and absorption coatings for use in the VIS thru MWIR wavelength regions. These thin film coatings can be coupled with an aperture coating. Picture frames, chopper patterns, multispectral sectors are all possible. The coatings are produced in our MicroDyn magnetron sputtering technology and can be applied to substrates as large as 6 inches in diameter. Substrates include Fused Silica, Ge, Si, n-BK7, Quartz, and Sapphire. Our positive and negative resist photolithography processes enable two-sided patterning of these coatings with feature sizes as small as 20 µm. With our well-equipped metrology lab, we can measure spectral performance over operating temperatures as low as 15 K and as high as 353 K, perform a wide range of Mil-Spec environmental tests, and precisely measure surface figure both before and after coating. Applications include space based sensors, atmospheric/remote sensing, medical/environmental monitoring, ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) as well as targeting/tracking. DSI’s optical thin films and patterned coatings are custom-designed for specific applications. Our engineers work closely with customers to design the optimal combination of performance, delivery, and cost. Contact us today to discuss your next project.
