Innoviz Lidars to be Deployed at U.S. Airports: Week in Brief: 8/9/24

SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 9, 2024 — Lumileds, LLC, a manufacturer of LEDs for automotive and illumination markets, has completed the $238 million sale of its lamps and accessories business to First Brands Group, LLC, an automotive parts manufacturer. According to Lumileds CEO Steve Barlow, the sale allows Lumileds to focus on its core LED business. The acquisition includes automotive lamps factories in China, Germany, and Poland. Lumileds retains its factories and sites in the Netherlands, United States, Malaysia, Singapore, Germany, and Jiaxing, China.

TEL AVIV, Israel — Supplier of lidar solutions Innoviz Technologies has entered into a distribution agreement with nonautomotive lidar analytics company The Indoor Lab to deploy InnovizTwo lidars across its airport portfolio, beginning with Denver, Tampa, and Nashville International airports. The lidars will be used to offer a solution that identifies, classifies, and informs infrastructure and transit management professionals about potential challenges or threats that may occur to improve safety across entry and exit points, tarmacs, baggage check, terminals, and runways.

BILLERICA, Mass. — Entegris, Inc., a supplier of materials and process solutions for the semiconductor industry, has entered into a long-term supply agreement with onsemi, a manufacturer of energy-efficient power semiconductors. Under the terms of the agreement, Entegris will provide onsemi a range of co-optimized chemical mechanical planarization solutions for silicon carbide applications.

VENTURA, Calif. — Impact Electronic Solutions (Impact ES) has acquired Coastal Connections, a provider of engineered fiber optic cables and assemblies. Coastal Connections is a supplier to sectors including medical, space defense, industrial, laser communications, and R&D. The acquisition strengthens Impact ES' ability to provide all-in-one solutions. Coastal Connections president and founder Andy Devine will join the management team of Impact ES as head of its Ventura, California facility. Impact ES provides electronics and cable technologies for aerospace, defense, industrial, and space markets, as well as select consumer and emerging markets. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Industrial blue laser technology company NUBURU has entered into a strategic collaboration with Lasers4NetZero, an initiative dedicated to advancing sustainable practices for the implementation of their 42-month program, the Project Advisory Group of Lasers for Accelerated Net-zero Transition. The training program aims to cultivate a new generation of doctoral candidates specializing in laser material processing, artificial intelligence for quality control, advanced process simulation, and sustainability analysis for e-vehicles manufacturing.

ATLANTA — Axion BioSystems, a life sciences tools company, has entered into an agreement with Corning Incorporated, developer of technologies using materials science, that continues Corning’s exclusive worldwide distribution rights for the Corning Cell Counter. The device, developed by Axion BioSystems and distributed by Corning, distinguishes between cells and debris, detects individual cells within a cluster, counts three-dimensional organoids, and measures their size for biomedical research applications, clinical diagnostics, and cell therapy administration.

SEOUL, South Korea — SK hynix has signed a nonbinding preliminary memorandum of terms with the U.S. Department of Commerce to receive up to $450 million in proposed direct funding and access to proposed loans of $500 million as part of the CHIPS and Science Act for its investment to build a production base for semiconductor packaging in Indiana. Separately, the company plans to seek a tax benefit equivalent of up to 25% of the qualified capital expenditures through the Investment Tax Credit program. The company revealed plans in April to invest $3.9 billion to build a production base in Indiana for advanced packaging. With the base, SK hynix intends to collaborate with local research institutions, including Purdue University of semiconductor R&D.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Precision aerospace manufacturing company Jeh Aerospace has entered into a strategic partnership with spatial AI and extended reality solutions company GridRaster for the integration of spatial AI, AR, and VR technologies into aerospace manufacturing. The partnership also includes enhanced training programs, AR/VR-powered work-assistant tools, and more accurate inspection and maintenance procedures.

STRASBOURG, France — Bruker Corporation, a scientific instruments and analytical and diagnostic solutions company, has made a strategic investment in NovAliX, a preclinical contract research organization specializing in drug discovery services. The minority investment aims to accelerate the growth and further expansion of NovAliX, particularly within Europe and the United States. The two companies will also collaborate on advancing functional structural biology, biophysical methods for characterizing molecular dynamics and interactions, biocondensates and aggregation, drug candidate binding, therapeutic mechanisms of action, and elucidating potential off-target effects.
